What is NEBOSH?

NEBOSH is the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. NEBOSH is an independent examining board which was founded in 1979.

As an examination board, NEBOSH publishes syllabuses which accredited training centres (such as Kawns Safety Services Ltd) offer as programmes of study.

NEBOSH qualifications are widely acknowledged throughout industry in the UK and overseas.

What is the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) at Level 3 in the National Qualifications Framework. The qualification is also designated as the NEBOSH Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, but most people refer to it as the NEBOSH National General Certificate. The qualification reflects the management model specified in the Health and Safety Executive's guide to the management of occupational health and safety (HSG65).

This qualification is a ideal first step towards a career in occupational health and safety, or it can provide a very useful qualification for those who manage or represent staff (e.g. union safety reps.) in a working environment.

The NEBOSH NGC has undergone amendment (in July 2006) in order to facilitate delivery and examination in a 'unitised' format. The qualification now comprises three 'units', two theory based and a practical unit.

We are able to offer learning packages which cover the theory units in conjunction with the recommended textbook (please see side panel):

  • NGC 1: Management of Health and Safety
  • NGC 2: Controlling Workplace Hazards

Via our operating partners, Kawns Safety Services Ltd, full examination facilities can be offered, including the practical unit:

  • NGC 3: Health and Safety Practical Application

Please contact Kawns Safety Services Ltd direct to find out more about NEBOSH NGC examinations.

How can I sit the NEBOSH Examination?

NGC 1 and 2 examinations consist of written papers of two hours duration. During the online course you will be asked to attempt several questions styled on those in recent examinations. You will be given feedback by your tutor with regard to the answers you provide. In this way, we give one-to-one support to help you build towards your actual examinations, both in terms of subject knowledge and NEBOSH examination technique.

Kawns Safety Services Ltd is a NEBOSH training and examination centre. They provide examinations for the General Certificate in line with the NEBOSH National examination days which occur each year in March, June, September and December. Follow this link to see the exact NEBOSH examination dates. Please note that there are very strict rules regarding application cut off dates. Application forms can be obtained from (Kawns Safety Services Ltd, for their examinations only) or through any examination provider. If you use an alternative provider you must register with them for the exam well before the cut off date so that the application can get to NEBOSH in time. There may be additional administration fees to pay these providers.

Kawns will register you onto any of the national examinations if you ask them to do so, you must however be a registered student with them through either the regular course structure or the online facility. National examinations will cost £90 for all three module NGC 1, 2, & 3 and registering through Kawns will cost an additional £50 + vat. You will need to discuss with your online tutor about doing the examinations separately, this can be arranged but you must have completed the relevant parts of the online course.

You are also strongly advised to attend an examination workshop for each of the modules. These occur in the weeks before the national examinations, normal cost of the workshop is £130 + vat and they are held at the Kawns premises in Gosport.
